Monaco hosts the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Specialist Group on Seahorses, Pipefish, and Seadragons…
This global network of researchers focuses on conserving these vulnerable marine species, often threatened by habitat destruction, overfishing, and illegal trade. At the invitation of the Department of External Relations and Cooperation, 43 experts from 23 countries convened in Monaco for their first in-person meeting on Friday 28th November. The event underscores Monaco’s ongoing dedication to preserving fragile marine ecosystems and builds on prior conservation efforts, including collaborations with the “Seahorse Project,” led by renowned marine biologist Dr. Amanda Vincent, a pioneer in seahorse research.
The gathering facilitated stronger connections among group members and fostered the development of new strategies and initiatives. Discussions centred on advancing scientific research and increasing public awareness of the critical role these species play in marine ecosystems. These efforts aim to protect seahorses and their relatives, iconic symbols of marine biodiversity.
True to its environmental commitments, Monaco provided an ideal platform for collaboration, reinforcing its position as a leader in marine conservation. This meeting is part of the Principality’s broader initiatives to safeguard ocean health and inspire international cooperation in addressing the urgent challenges facing marine life.
