On November 28 and 29, 2024, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) examined Monaco’s policies to combat racial discrimination...
This review was based on the Principality’s report detailing its implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which Monaco ratified in 1995. A Monegasque delegation, led by H.E. Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations Office in Geneva, attended the session at the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights headquarters in Geneva.
The delegation included representatives from various ministries and Monaco’s Judicial Services Department. They presented Monaco’s progress, addressed questions from CERD experts, and elaborated on measures taken to prevent, address, and penalize discriminatory behaviors, whether based on race or other grounds.
During the discussions, the delegation highlighted Monaco’s policies to support victims of discrimination and explained specific national practices in areas such as employment access, education, and social aid. These contributions demonstrated Monaco’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and equity while addressing the unique characteristics of its society.
Following the review, CERD will issue its final observations, including recommendations, some of which will undergo a follow-up procedure. These recommendations aim to guide Monaco in further strengthening its anti-discrimination framework.
Established under the 1965 International Convention, CERD is composed of independent experts tasked with monitoring states’ compliance with the treaty’s provisions. Monaco’s active participation underscores its dedication to promoting human rights and combating racial discrimination in line with international standards.
