Plans to redevelop the Place des Moulins, a bustling area in Monaco, are generating mixed reactions from shopkeepers and residents who use the space daily.

Situated in the eastern part of the Principality, the square is a key location for both locals and visitors, making it a hot topic of discussion as its future is reimagined. Place des Moulins, home to cafes like the Olivieraie and Panino Club, is a vibrant spot where people gather to enjoy coffee, chat, and take in views of the Mediterranean. Many regulars express concern over the upcoming changes, fearing that the area’s unique charm might be lost in the process of modernization.

Some residents feel that the existing layout, with its greenery, cosmopolitan atmosphere, and central location, already works well. However, others believe that improvements could help address issues like congested parking and heavy traffic flow.

One suggestion, shared by Monaco Matin, involves redesigning the square to better manage traffic, with the idea of a large roundabout replacing the current setup of traffic lights. Additionally, there are calls for creating more open spaces, clearing sightlines to the sea, and organizing seasonal events to bring more life to the square.

The planned updates are likely to include enhancements to public areas, with ideas like adding fitness equipment, a dog park, or a new café near the children’s playground. While the playground itself was recently renovated, the dilapidated pergola in the Trocadéro area is viewed as needing significant attention.

Amid various rumours circulating about potential changes, including speculation about new luxury boutiques or international coffee chains moving into the area, locals are eager to maintain the authenticity of Place des Moulins. Many hope that any redevelopment will preserve the original vision of the square as a peaceful belvedere offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean.
