The world’s oceans are under increasing threat from pollution, climate change, and overfishing, posing risks to marine ecosystems and the biodiversity they support.

As key players in the maritime world, the yachting industry is uniquely positioned to lead in sustainability by adopting eco-friendly practices and investing in green technologies that can help protect these precious environments.

The 4th Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous, held at the Yacht Club de Monaco in September 2024, highlighted this responsibility, showcasing how the marina industry can use sustainability as a tool for change. Organized by Monaco Marina Management (M3) and supported by key partners such as the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the event brought together innovators, architects, and marina operators to discuss how maritime infrastructures can evolve to meet the environmental challenges of today.

With a focus on innovation, technology, and collaboration, the event emphasized the importance of smart, sustainable solutions in the industry. José Marco Casellini, CEO of M3, stressed that “tomorrow’s yachting must be smart and sustainable,” a message echoed by Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Through panels discussing technology, investment, and regenerative architecture, the event showed how partnerships between engineers, architects, and marina managers are key to driving sustainable development.

The International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards concluded the event, honoring projects like Clean Sea Solutions’ plastic waste-collecting Aquapod® and Ecocean’s Biohut®, which supports marine biodiversity. These initiatives demonstrate how sustainability is not just a trend but a necessity for the future of yachting.

As the industry embraces these forward-thinking practices, it has the potential to set a new standard for environmental stewardship on the high seas.
