The memory of Princess Grace has been given a permanent place in Washington, with a new garden tribute celebrating her enduring connection to the United States and Monaco…
Around 60 guests gathered for the dedication of a swan bench honouring the Princess in the Smithsonian’s Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden on the National Mall. A Princess Grace rose has been planted alongside the installation, creating what organisers describe as a living tribute for future generations.
The ceremony formed part of Princess Grace: Celebrating an Enduring Legacy, organised by Smithsonian Associates in collaboration with the Embassy of Monaco and Smithsonian Gardens.
Born in Philadelphia, Grace Kelly became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses before marrying Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 and becoming Princess Grace of Monaco. Speakers highlighted her generosity, creativity and compassion, as well as the cultural bridge she created between her native United States and the Principality.
The programme also explored her contribution to the performing arts and the continuing work of the Princess Grace Foundation-USA. The Foundation was established in 1982 by her husband, Prince Rainier III, in memory of the Princess, to support emerging artists in theatre, dance and film.
The tribute coincides with two anniversaries: 70 years since the marriage of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III, and 20 years since Monaco established its embassy in Washington in 2006.
