The Mayor of Cap d’Ail, Xavier Beck, is appealing against a decision by the Nice Metropolitan area to approve the construction of a bigger roundabout and interchange close to the Monaco border on the Moyenne Corniche.

Monaco has offered to pay 80 percent of the cost of the project, which its proponents claim will ease traffic problems at an important choke point. Opponents claim the road-widening scheme will simply mean that choke points will move unless there is a reduction in traffic flow, in which case the project would not be needed.

Mayor Beck told his municipal council that the Metropolis had not followed correct procedures, and had mentioned “international reasons” for its go-ahead.

The project, costing 30 million euros, was first mooted more than 10 years ago.
