A Romanian national has been sentenced to two months in jail, despite not being in court, local French-language daily Monaco Matin reports.

If he had been present he would have been relieved to hear that the sentence was suspended.

The 22 year-old native of Bucharest was stopped when he tried to exit the store with stolen airpods, valued at over 200 euros, on October 21 last, having already raised suspicions by wearing large sunglasses and a hat, Monaco’s criminal court heard.

When the police arrived the suspect admitted the theft, saying that he didn’t have enough money on him at the time.

Unusually, he did not have a criminal record ether in Monaco or France.
