AS Monaco welcomed La Liga’s Real Sociedad to Stade Louis II on Thursday, November 25, for a Europa League group stage fixture.

For this European encounter, head coach Niko Kovac arranged his men in a 4-2-3-1 formation, placing team captain Wissam Ben Yedder as the sole striker up front.

Kevin Volland was the first to make an impact on the scoreline, with a goal at the 28th minute in front of red and white supporters in the stands of Stade Louis II.

However, Real Sociedad were quick to counter, and equalised at the 35th minute courtesy of a goal by Alexander Isak.

Unfortunately for the Spanish visitors, the Monegasques were even faster on the counter, and regained the lead just two minutes later. Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana was able to get the hosts ahead on an assist from teammate Benoît Badiashile.

An exciting first half ended with a 2-1 scoreline that would remain unchanged in the second half, despite the best efforts of either teams.

Monaco’s saviour on the evening, Fofana would go on to pick up a red card at the 89th minute, but that would be all the excitement before the match could conclude.

With a 2-1 win on the fifth match day of the Europa League Group Stages, Monaco sit firmly at the top of their group, and by a considerable margin, too.

The Monegasque’s final group stage fixture will be against SK Sturm Graz, but before that Monaco will face off against Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Sunday, November 28.
