The Monegasques endured an away day to forget against a determined RC Lens side on Saturday, April 22, leaving the Stade Bollaert-Delelis without any points as the hosts dominated for the duration of the match.
The first blow to the scoreline arrived at the ninth minute through a successful Loïs Openda strike, but the Belgian striker wasn’t done there, as he scored once more to complete his brace at only the 16th minute. The visiting Principality side never recovered from this early fiasco, and returned to the locker room for halftime with the scoreline standing at 2-0.
Lens came close to scoring their third goal at the 50th minute, but this was ruled out by VAR. Nevertheless, the Sang et Or found their third goal six minutes later, this time through Adrien Thomasson.
An unrecognisable team was unable to find a response in the form of a goal before the final whistle blew to mark a 3-0 loss to Lens, a defeat in one of the most crucial matches of the season so far as this was the Monegasques’ opportunity to leapfrog Lens in the Ligue 1 standings.
As it currently stands, Monaco occupy fourth place in the table, and will have another chance to climb when they face off against Montpellier on Sunday, April 30.
