On the 140th anniversary of Claude Monet’s first stopover in Monte-Carlo and on the Riviera, the Grimaldi Forum will devote its major summer exhibition to him from July 8 to September 3.

Bringing together a hundred works from around the world in a space of 3000 m², the exhibition will be one of the largest monographs devoted to Claude Monet of this decade, and undoubtedly the most daring.

The exhibition will retrace the work of Monet and explore the artist’s stays on the Riviera at a pivotal moment in his life. The route, punctuated by more than 100 paintings from all over the world, including many masterpieces rarely presented together – and one not shown before – will offer a new look at the work of the Master, Grimaldi Forum said.

Located at the crossroads of the chronological progression and the thematic bias, the exhibition – placed under the curatorship of Marianne Mathieu, specialist of Claude Monet – will give the keys to better understand the painter’s quest through an exceptional scenography created in a museographic space offering total freedom of creation over 3000m².

Halfway through his long life, Claude Monet, still in search of inspiration, made his first trip to Monte-Carlo and the Riviera that he discovered as an artist with his friend Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

He came back alone in 1884 and then in 1888. In Monte-Carlo, Roquebrune, Bordighera then Antibes, he would pursue his obsession, to capture light.

The northern painter that he was discovered a new palette of colours, new elements, and encountered difficulties in painting them. It was during his last stay in Antibes in 1888 that he anticipated his famous series painting from the beach of La Salis, the fort of Antibes in all weathers.

A special section of 25 exceptional paintings, brought together for the very first time close to where they were created, will gloriously reflect Monet’s work on the Riviera and his quest to capture light itself.

The exhibition runs from July 8 until September 3.
