Thirty years after its creation, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s acclaimed ballet Romeo and Juliet has returned to the Opéra Garnier in Monte Carlo for four sold-out performances from October 29 to November 1, confirming the enduring appeal of one of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo’s most celebrated productions…
First presented in 1996, Maillot’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy has since been performed more than 400 times on major international stages. Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s evocative score, the production combines classical ballet with contemporary storytelling, exploring the familiar tragedy through the perspective of Friar Laurence.
For this anniversary revival, three different couples will take on the leading roles, bringing fresh interpretations to characters that have captivated audiences for generations. Among them is Juliette Klein, who makes her Monaco debut in the title role, describing the emotional demands of portraying a young woman experiencing love, joy and devastating loss.

The production also brings together Maillot’s longstanding creative collaborators, including costume designer Jérôme Kaplan, set designer Ernest Pignon-Ernest and lighting designer Dominique Drillot.
Reflecting on the ballet’s remarkable longevity, Maillot expressed his delight that the work remains relevant and vibrant three decades later, its continued success secured by successive generations of dancers bringing new life to Shakespeare’s timeless story.
