As reported by GP Fans, Sergio Perez revealed that he first discovered Monaco had been selected through the Formula 1 drivers’ WhatsApp group, which quickly became unusually busy. The Cadillac driver declined to reveal what was said, joking that the conversation would remain private.
Lewis Hamilton has questioned the value of adding another race around the narrow streets, whilst Max Verstappen said a Monaco Sprint could produce much the same scenario as Sunday’s Grand Prix, with excitement at the start followed by limited opportunities to pass, according to Sky News.
Others see advantages. Oscar Piastri believes having two qualifying sessions could make the weekend more interesting, whilst George Russell welcomed the additional competitive action.
The Sprint format will also change Monaco’s traditional rhythm. Drivers normally use three practice sessions to gradually build confidence and move closer to the barriers before qualifying. In 2027, Sprint qualifying on Friday will require them to find that limit considerably earlier.
Whatever happens on track, the drivers’ WhatsApp group has apparently already provided plenty of action.
