Russian businessman and International Boxing Association president Umar Kremlev is back in the headlines after Donald Trump Jr and his wife confirmed that he hosted two nights of celebrations following their wedding in the Bahamas…
As reported by Sky News, the couple described Kremlev’s contribution as an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift”. ProPublica had reported that he covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses. Kremlev’s press office said he and Trump Jr have a friendly relationship and first met several years ago.
The story has renewed attention on Kremlev, who has previously shown an interest in bringing major international boxing events to Monaco.
Kremlev has headed the International Boxing Association (IBA) since 2020 and has documented links with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In April, a month before the Trump wedding, Putin presented him with Russia’s Order of Friendship in Moscow.
According to Monaco Matin, Kremlev has cultivated links with the Monegasque Boxing Federation and previously explored the possibility of staging major international tournaments in the Principality.
Whether those ambitions remain active is currently unclear, and there has been no announcement of a new Monaco event.
However, Kremlev’s renewed international profile puts the spotlight back on his connections with the Principality and on whether Monaco could once again feature in his plans for international boxing.
