Jean d’Haussonville, France’s Ambassador to Monaco, leaves his post today after three years representing the French Republic in the Principality, as he departs for a new diplomatic mission.
D’Haussonville was appointed Ambassador to Monaco by decree on July 7, 2023, arriving in the Principality that August and formally presenting his letters of credence to Prince Albert II on September 5, 2023. During his tenure, he also served as Dean of Monaco’s Diplomatic Corps.
Born in Paris on January 21, 1968, d’Haussonville built a long career in French public administration before his posting to Monaco. A graduate of Sciences Po Paris and holder of a postgraduate degree in banking and finance from Université Paris-Dauphine, he completed his military service as an officer with the French Navy in Toulon before joining the École Nationale d’Administration, graduating as part of the René Char class of 1997. He began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs working on French nuclear testing policy, before serving as a negotiator with France’s permanent representation to NATO in Brussels between 1997 and 2001. He went on to head the European Union enlargement unit within the SGCI, the body coordinating European affairs on behalf of the French Prime Minister, and later worked within the cabinet of Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, France’s Minister of Culture and Communication, overseeing the ministry’s European and international affairs as well as its patronage initiatives.
Before his appointment to Monaco, d’Haussonville spent thirteen years, from January 2010 to January 2023, as Director General of the Domaine National de Chambord, one of France’s most significant heritage estates, a notably long tenure at the helm of the historic site. He also served as Commissioner for the development of the Domaine National de Rambouillet.
D’Haussonville is a Knight of the Legion of Honour, an Officer of the National Order of Merit, an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, an Officer of Agricultural Merit, and holds Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit, as well as being an Officer of Monaco’s Order of Saint-Charles. He is married with four young children, and has served as a volunteer board member of the Fondation Mérimée, dedicated to the preservation of French historic monuments.
