Monaco is strengthening its response to climate change with the launch of its “Renaturing the City” concept, an ambitious approach that integrates nature into urban planning to improve quality of life in one of the world’s most densely populated territories…

With around 20,000 people per square kilometre and Mediterranean temperatures rising faster than the global average, the Principality is seeking long-term solutions to combat urban heat islands and create more comfortable public spaces. Government officials say every major development project will now consider natural elements from the earliest planning stages, ensuring greenery becomes an integral part of Monaco’s future rather than an afterthought.

Recent work along Avenue Princesse Grace illustrates the approach, with expanded planting areas, improved pedestrian spaces and additional vegetation designed to provide shade while enhancing the urban environment. Future projects will extend the initiative to areas including the Honneur II district, nearby pedestrian crossings and the Bougainville square, where landscaping will help reduce heat reflected from hard surfaces during the summer months.

The strategy also supports Monaco’s international environmental commitments, including the COP target of renaturing 30 percent of the Principality by 2030. By combining innovative urban design with increased biodiversity, officials hope to create a greener, cooler and more resilient Monaco for future generations while demonstrating that environmental protection and modern city living can successfully coexist.
