AS Monaco moved to the summit of Ligue 1 on Sunday, August 30, defeating Olympique de Marseille 2-0 at Stade Louis-II in a dominant display led by a Paris Brunner double, securing the Rouge et Blanc’s first home league win of the season in front of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and club president Dmitry Rybolovlev on Sunday, August 30.
The win marked Monaco’s fourth straight victory of the campaign, coming just three days after their 4-1 aggregate triumph over Górnik Zabrze secured qualification for the Conference League’s regular phase. Head coach Filipe Luís opted for continuity, naming the same starting eleven that had beaten both Górnik and Le Havre, with Brunner again leading the line and Stanis Idumbo and Mamadou Coulibaly retained on the flanks.
Monaco struck early and struck well. Just past the quarter-hour mark, Brunner rose above the Marseille defence to head home a pinpoint cross from Aleksandr Golovin, opening the scoring in the 13th minute and notching his third goal in four official matches for the club, and his eighth since the start of pre-season. The German forward almost doubled his tally moments later, only for a well-placed half-volley to be kept out by goalkeeper De Lange on the line in the 22nd minute. Monaco continued to dominate proceedings through the remainder of the half, with further efforts from Denis Zakaria and Idumbo, while Marseille’s response was limited to a speculative long-range attempt from Amine Harit that drifted well wide.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Marseille probing through Gomes and Weah early on, but it was Monaco who struck the decisive blow. In the 53rd minute, Brunner completed his brace with a moment of real quality, driving through the Marseille defence with two dummy shots before finishing coolly, his fourth goal in as many appearances this season, set up by a first-time pass from Eric Dier.
With Marseille visibly shaken, Monaco continued to create the better chances, Idumbo’s clever chest-and-volley combination from a Coulibaly cross was well saved by De Lange in the 72nd minute, while Marseille’s late pushes through Emerson and Gouiri were comfortably repelled by the Monaco defence.
The result sends Monaco top of the Ligue 1 table after two rounds, extending the club’s strong recent record against Marseille, having now won 11 of their 15 home meetings with the Olympiens across all competitions since returning to the top flight in 2013-14, with no side having lost more often to Monaco at Stade Louis-II over that period than Marseille.
Attention now turns to a trip to Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes next Friday, kicking off at 9:05pm.
