A large-scale renovation project aimed at modernising Monaco’s Centre Commercial de Fontvieille is set to begin next month, as the Principality moves forward with plans to improve one of its busiest commercial hubs while longer-term redevelopment discussions continue.

The project was officially presented this week by Monaco’s Administration des Domaines to representatives of the Fontvieille shopping centre’s business association, Carrefour Monaco management and the Union of Monegasque Traders and Artisans. Works are scheduled to run from June through December 2026.

Designed by Monaco-based architecture agency TAG, led by architect Jérôme Hein, the redevelopment carries a budget of €4.36 million and focuses on transforming the look and atmosphere of the shopping centre without interrupting daily commercial activity.

Rather than a structural reconstruction, the project centres on a broad aesthetic and functional upgrade intended to make the site brighter, easier to navigate and more appealing to visitors. Officials say the plans were shaped in part by feedback from retailers operating inside the centre.

The works will affect both the ground floor and mezzanine areas, with new wall coverings, redesigned ceilings featuring illuminated stretched-fabric elements, upgraded lighting systems, modernised signage and improvements to existing structural features throughout the gallery.

Authorities stressed that businesses will remain open during the six-month construction period, with special measures planned to minimise disruption for customers and retailers alike. Construction teams will also be required to limit noise, dust and vibration levels while maintaining access to shops and public areas.

The makeover follows several recent upgrades already completed in Fontvieille, including the replacement of escalators near the Léo Ferré esplanade and the Jardin Animalier, as well as the reopening of four travelators connecting the district’s parking levels earlier this month.

The refurbishment forms part of wider efforts to revitalise the Fontvieille commercial district and improve the experience for residents, workers and visitors ahead of the centre’s eventual long-term restructuring.
