The Grimaldi Forum hosted the world premiere of Ma Bayadère, the latest original creation by Jean-Christophe Maillot for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, on Saturday, December 27…
Inspired by La Bayadère, the great classical ballet first created in Saint Petersburg in 1877, Maillot offers a bold and contemporary reinterpretation of this cornerstone of the classical repertoire.
Attended by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Hanover, President of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, alongside Jean-Christophe Maillot and Grimaldi Forum director Sylvie Biancheri, the premiere marked a major moment in the Principality’s cultural calendar. Rather than revisiting the original temple-bound narrative, Maillot transposes the action into a dance studio, offering an intimate look at the inner life of a ballet company.
Choreographer, dancers, soloists and aspirants share the stage in a story shaped by intense work, fleeting happiness, rivalry, love and tragedy, before giving way to reconciliation and a form of artistic paradise.
The performance was met with a triumphant reception, with prolonged applause for the dancers, the creative team and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Garrett Keast. Audience members praised the production’s fluidity, musicality and striking scenography, while some noted the sensitivity with which Maillot reimagines a ballet so deeply rooted in tradition.
