Residents of Fontvieille are being advised to take precautions on the night of Friday, September 6 to Saturday, September 7, as mosquito control operations will be carried out between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning…
The measure follows the detection of a case of chikungunya in a person living in the Fontvieille district. As a precaution, the Department of Health is coordinating the targeted intervention to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne transmission.
Authorities have asked residents to keep windows firmly closed during the night, to avoid walking outdoors while the operation is taking place, and to ensure pets remain inside. The public is also reminded to remove or empty any stagnant water from balconies, terraces, or gardens, as these can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Epidemiological data collected so far indicate that the infection was contracted outside the Principality. This assessment is reinforced by weekly monitoring of Monaco’s mosquito populations, which has never revealed the presence of pathogens, including the chikungunya virus. Officials stress that the intervention is a precautionary measure, carried out in the interest of public health and community safety.
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes, typically causing fever, joint pain, rash, and fatigue. While rarely life-threatening, the illness can be extremely debilitating, and Monaco’s health services are working to ensure that the risk of local transmission remains as low as possible.
Residents are encouraged to follow guidance closely during the intervention period.
