The Palace Square was awash with emotion, unity and pride on Saturday evening as Monaco paid tribute to His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, marking two decades since his accession to the throne. An estimated 6,000 Monegasques and residents gathered at the foot of the Prince’s Palace to honour a reign that has combined quiet determination with global vision.
What began as a warm summer evening quickly turned into a defining chapter in Monaco’s modern history. Attendees, including members of the Princely Family, watched a poignant documentary chronicling the milestones of the Prince’s 20-year journey — from pivotal state decisions and humanitarian efforts to touching family moments and environmental leadership.
As the film concluded, the Princely Family stepped out to greet the crowd, the national anthem ringing through the square as voices joined in unison. The sense of connection between ruler and people was palpable.
In a speech filled with warmth and admiration, Monaco’s Mayor, Georges Marsan, captured the spirit of the evening. He hailed the Prince as both guardian and guide, praising his enduring compassion and unwavering commitment to Monaco’s values. Marsan made special mention of the Sovereign’s early and ongoing environmental advocacy, recalling Prince Albert’s expeditions to the poles — journeys that placed Monaco on the map of global climate diplomacy. “Through you, Monaco has a voice in the world,” the Mayor declared, “and that voice speaks with clarity, courage and conscience.”
Prince Albert II then addressed the crowd with heartfelt sincerity, speaking of the bond he shares with his people — not merely as their head of state, but as a fellow member of what he described as “a big family.” His words were laced with gratitude and resolve as he reflected on two decades of leadership shaped by both challenges and joys. “Everything I do,” he said, “from the quiet of my office to faraway seas, I do for you.”
The Prince’s tribute to his own family was deeply personal, singling out Princess Charlene and their children, Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, for their love and support — a rare and tender moment of public reflection.
Looking ahead, the Sovereign’s message was one of continued ambition and unity. “Let’s harness the energy, dreams, and hopes we still carry,” he urged, “to keep building the Monaco we believe in — together.”
The celebration ended not with pomp, but with genuine connection: the Princely family mingled with the crowd, sharing smiles and handshakes. A monumental cake and festive cheer sealed the evening, marking 20 years not just of leadership, but of shared purpose between a Prince and his people.
