His Serene Highness Prince Albert II has marked a major milestone for education in Madagascar with the inauguration of a new college bearing his name, during the first stop of an official visit to the African continent.

The Sovereign travelled to Akamasoa after arriving in Madagascar on Friday morning, where he was welcomed by the country’s Minister of Public Security. Accompanied by Father Pedro Opeka and Donatella Campioni, president of Monaco Aide et Présence, he attended the opening of the Prince Albert II College and unveiled a commemorative plaque.

The occasion brought together around 12,000 schoolchildren, who organised a special welcome ceremony featuring traditional Malagasy songs and dances, performances and an athletics race. The celebrations were marked by an atmosphere of enthusiasm as pupils gathered to greet the Prince.

During the visit, Prince Albert II also entered a classroom to meet students and hear about their educational experiences and ambitions for the future.

The inauguration highlighted the longstanding relationship between Monaco Aide et Présence and the Akamasoa community. The association has supported Father Pedro Opeka’s work since 1995, backing initiatives aimed at improving living conditions and opportunities for local families.

The visit placed particular emphasis on education and the prospects of younger generations, while highlighting Monaco’s continued involvement in humanitarian initiatives in Madagascar.

Prince Albert II is expected to continue his African visit over the coming days.
