A suspicious package prompted a security operation in Monaco on Thursday evening, October 15, temporarily closing part of Boulevard Albert Ier and causing an explosion heard across the Condamine district. The incident was first reported by NEWS.MC…

At approximately 6.30pm, officers from Monaco’s Public Security Department established a security perimeter near Le Khedive tobacconist, at the bottom of Rue Caroline, following reports of an abandoned bag.

Specialist bomb disposal officers from the Protection, Surveillance and Intervention Group (GPSI) attended the scene and carried out a controlled operation to neutralise the suspicious item at 6.48pm. Traffic along Boulevard Albert Ier was temporarily halted whilst the operation took place.

The incident comes amidst heightened vigilance following the parcel bomb attack in Monaco this summer, which left three people injured.

Speaking in July, Public Security Director Eric Arella explained that the increase in suspicious package incidents reflected greater public awareness and a willingness to report potentially dangerous objects. He also warned that abandoning items in public places could result in fines.
