Newcastle United have completed the signing of 20-year-old midfielder Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco, with the France Under-20 international putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at St. James’ Park.
The transfer is reported to be worth an initial £30 million, with a further £5.5 million in potential add-ons, taking the total package to around £35.5 million (roughly €40 million). Bamba will wear the number eight shirt, previously worn by Sandro Tonali before his £100 million move to Tottenham earlier in the transfer window, a departure that had left Newcastle searching for midfield reinforcements.
Born in Blois on July 14, 2006, Bamba joined his hometown club’s academy at the age of five before moving to Monaco’s youth setup, La Diagonale, a decade later, the same academy that produced Kylian Mbappé and Thierry Henry. He signed his first professional contract as a 17-year-old in February 2024, having already won the Coupe Gambardella with Monaco’s youth side in 2023 alongside teammates Pape Cabral, Ilane Touré and Lucas Michal.
Bamba made his senior debut for Monaco in August 2025, coming on in a 3-1win over Le Havre on the opening weekend of the Ligue 1 season. He went on to establish himself as a first-team regular over the 2025-26 campaign, making 25 appearances across all competitions, including 18 in Ligue 1 and five in the UEFA Champions League, where he featured against Real Madrid and Juventus before Monaco’s elimination by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout play-offs. Primarily a defensive midfielder, Bamba ranked among the top five Ligue 1 midfielders last season for duels won, tackles, successful take-ons and aerial duels won, among players with at least 500 minutes played. He signed a contract extension with Monaco last autumn, tying him to the club until 2030, and was named on this year’s European Golden Boy award nominee list.
Speaking after the move, Bamba said he was very happy to join Newcastle, calling it a new challenge and expressing excitement to test himself in the Premier League. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe welcomed the signing, describing Bamba as an exciting young player with huge potential for growth, while Sporting Director Ross Wilson said the club had followed his progress at Monaco closely as his profile continued to rise across Europe.
AS Monaco confirmed the departure of their academy graduate, thanking Bamba for his years at the club and wishing him success in the next stage of his career.
