Monaco has introduced a new credit card-sized driving licence designed to improve security, durability and convenience while bringing the Principality into line with international standards…
Available from July 4, the new licence will gradually replace the existing paper-style format, although current licences will remain valid for several years during a transitional period. Authorities have stressed that existing licence holders do not need to take any immediate action.
The updated licence is smaller, made from recyclable material and incorporates a range of advanced security features to help prevent fraud. Among them is a visual electronic certificate on the reverse, allowing officials to verify its authenticity more quickly during roadside checks.
Under the new system, licences will be renewed every 15 years, mirroring the renewal cycle for passports and national identity cards. The process is purely administrative and intended to update the holder’s photograph, with no further driving test required. The fee remains unchanged at €23 for both first-time applications and renewals.
The government has also launched a dedicated online renewal service through the MonGuichet.mc platform, enabling motorists to complete most applications remotely, including uploading photographs and providing a digital signature. Officials say the changes form part of Monaco’s wider digital transformation programme, aimed at making public services more accessible, efficient and user-friendly.
