The bombing that rocked Monaco on Monday night has thrust Ukrainian businessman Vadim Ermolaev into the international spotlight after he was identified as one of three people seriously injured in the attack…
Ermolaev, a property developer and industrialist originally from Dnipro, suffered burns and shrapnel injuries when an explosive device detonated outside the entrance to his Monaco residence. He was transferred to hospital in Nice, where he remains under medical care as investigators continue to search for the person responsible for the attack.
As reported by The Times, Ermolaev is among Ukraine’s wealthiest businessmen, having built the Alef Group into a diversified conglomerate with interests in real estate, manufacturing, agriculture and the drinks industry. Public estimates of his fortune have varied considerably over the years, while Ukrainian authorities imposed sanctions against him in 2023 over allegations linked to business activities in Crimea following Russia’s 2014 annexation of the peninsula. Ermolaev has denied wrongdoing through his representatives.
The attack has also prompted renewed scrutiny of his business career. Ukrainian media have linked his name to several ongoing investigations and have reported allegations concerning large-scale financial fraud and organised crime. Those claims have not been tested in court, and no criminal conviction against Ermolaev has been reported.
Monaco authorities have not suggested any motive for the bombing, and investigators say all lines of inquiry remain open. Officials have confirmed only that they believe the victims were deliberately targeted and that the investigation is continuing with the support of French authorities.
For now, the focus remains on identifying those behind one of the most serious criminal attacks ever to strike the Principality.
