AS Monaco Basket’s U18 and U21 teams took part in a prevention workshop this week focused on the risks of sports betting addiction among young athletes…

Organised in partnership with Monaco’s addiction care, support and prevention centre, the session highlighted the rapid growth of online gambling, with €11.5 billion wagered in France in 2025 alone.

Over the course of 45 minutes, players were introduced to the mechanisms of addiction, as well as its impact on mental health, brain development and long-term wellbeing. The discussion also extended beyond betting to include other forms of addiction, reinforcing the importance of awareness and self-control both on and off the court. Medical professionals reminded participants that dedicated support services are available locally should any issues arise.

Particular emphasis was placed on the strict regulations governing professional athletes, including the absolute ban on betting on basketball competitions in France and abroad. For many players, the workshop offered valuable insights into a subject they are increasingly exposed to as they progress in their careers.

Designed as a preventative initiative, the session aimed to equip these young athletes with the knowledge and discipline needed to avoid harmful behaviours and protect their future in the sport.
