The streets of Monaco’s old town came alive on Saturday, August 9 as the Principality honoured Saint Roman, its second patron saint after Sainte-Dévote, with a day steeped in tradition.
From the early morning, the Rock resonated with music, while red-and-white flags lined the streets. The programme began at 9:30. with a small procession distributing cockades and accompanied by live musicians. Over the course of an hour, the crowd grew as residents, visitors, and onlookers joined the route through the narrow streets.
The Saint-Roman Festival Committee, founded in 1868 and the oldest in Monaco, maintains this annual tradition, which originated in the former Saint-Romain district. The day’s activities included a mass celebrated in Monegasque and a community aperitif.
In the days preceding the feast, two evening gatherings attracted around 400 attendees, reflecting the inclusive nature of the celebration, which welcomes both locals and visitors.
