Monaco’s linguistic heritage took centre stage on Monday 16 June, as students, dignitaries, and proud families gathered in the Cour d’Honneur of the Town Hall for the annual Monégasque Language Competition prize ceremony. The event honoured a group of standout students who excelled in this year’s oral finals—living proof that the national language remains firmly rooted in the hearts of the next generation.

His Serene Highness Prince Albert II attended the ceremony, joined by Mayor Georges Marsan, members of the Communal Council, and numerous representatives from Monaco’s government, religious, and cultural institutions.

The evening opened with a stirring rendition of the Monégasque anthem by U Cantin d’A Roca, marking the choir’s 30th anniversary. Mayor Marsan used the occasion to underscore the importance of language in shaping identity: “If we want to remain who we are, language is not optional—it’s essential.”

Deputy Mayor Karyn Ardisson Salopek presented the winners and delivered a speech in Monégasque, hailing the students as stewards of Monaco’s soul and praising their passion for history, tradition, and linguistic pride “Our youth is our surest treasure,” she echoed, quoting Marc Curti.

This year’s competition saw over 1,900 pupils from CM2 to Terminale sit for the preliminary written stage, with a select few going on to shine in the oral finals. Organised by the Town Hall, the Department of Education, Youth and Sports, and the National Committee of Monégasque Traditions, the contest plays a vital role in promoting and preserving the unique language of the Principality.
