The third United Nations Ocean Conference opened this week in Nice, marking a critical moment for global marine governance…
Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the event brought together more than 220 delegations and 50 heads of state to discuss urgent issues facing the ocean, from climate change and biodiversity loss to plastic pollution and rising sea levels. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco took part in the opening session, highlighting the mounting threats to marine environments and reinforcing the need for multilateral action.
A key development came with the announcement of the implementation of the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ), aimed at protecting marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions. The conference also included the launch of “Starfish,” a new ocean barometer designed to track the state of the seas, year-on-year.
HSH Prince Albert II also visited several immersive exhibits and took part in roundtables, including the Polar Donors Roundtable, where he underscored the importance of preserving polar regions. His presence followed Monaco’s hosting of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, which laid the groundwork for financing ocean solutions.
Speakers called for greater regional cooperation and new investment in the blue economy, with $5 billion in bank commitments already pledged. The message was clear: sustainable ocean stewardship requires both political will and financial backing. As the conference continues until June 11th, it represents not only a policy milestone but a broader call for unity in protecting 71% of the planet’s surface — the ocean that connects us all.
