Monaco marked International Women’s Rights Day with a series of significant events recognizing female leadership, advocating for gender equality, and celebrating women’s contributions to society…
Among the highlights was the Woman of the Year award, presented to Monegasque business leader Ornella Barra at a ceremony held at the Yacht Club of Monaco. Barra, a key figure in the pharmaceutical industry, was honoured for her professional achievements and commitment to advancing women’s roles in business and healthcare. She succeeds hair surgeon Cecilia Maracci, who received the award in 2024.
Beyond recognizing female leadership, the Principality also took the occasion to highlight key social issues, including women’s rights and equality in professional and personal spheres. At the National Council, an eloquence competition organized by the Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights brought together young participants who debated the theme 24 Hours in the Life of a Woman. The competition, aimed at encouraging critical thinking and public speaking, culminated in a final round where high school student Clea Marquez emerged as the winner. Actress and filmmaker Audrey Dana, who served as the event’s patron, awarded the top prize and emphasized the importance of raising awareness through cultural and artistic expression.
In a significant legislative move, Monaco’s National Council submitted a bill aimed at further regulating access to voluntary termination of pregnancy. While abortion was decriminalized in 2019, local doctors are still restricted from performing the procedure, except in specific cases. This proposed reform seeks to ensure that women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies while aligning Monaco’s policies more closely with international human rights standards.
Additionally, the Peace and Sport initiative welcomed eight new Champions of Peace, including top female athletes from disciplines such as football, judo, and cycling. These ambassadors use their influence to promote equality, empowerment, and social cohesion through sport.
Through these initiatives, Monaco reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality, recognizing both progress made and the challenges that remain in the ongoing pursuit of women’s rights and representation.
