The Principality of Monaco marked Orthodox Christmas with the VI Annual Nativity Gala, uniting clergy, parishioners, and notable figures from Monaco and beyond. Organised by the Orthodox Church of Monaco’s Saint Elena Parish, the event celebrated the rich traditions of Orthodox Christianity, focusing this year on Georgia’s cultural and spiritual heritage under the theme, “A Georgian Christmas.”
Held at the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco on Friday, January 10, the evening was hosted by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, alongside a delegation representing His Holiness Patriarch Ilya II of Georgia. Attendees included Metropolitan Sava of Khoni and Samtredia, Bishop Vachtang of Margveti and Ubisi, and Patriarchal Protopresbyter George Zviadadze. Distinguished guests included members of Monaco’s government, mayors from neighbouring French towns, and representatives from the Georgian Red Cross.
The festivities began with a Nativity service at Saint Elena Parish, followed by a gala dinner featuring traditional Georgian music, dance, and cuisine. Highlights included performances by the Basiani Choir and soloists Sandra Gadelia and Tako Esebua, as well as Georgian dances by the Mandili Dance Ensemble. Chef Irakli Asatiani and his team, flown in from Tbilisi, prepared a three-course meal showcasing Georgia’s renowned gastronomy.

In his address, Bishop Irenei celebrated the deep historical ties of the Georgian Orthodox Church, presenting the delegation with an icon of St. John the Wonderworker. Metropolitan Sava expressed gratitude for Monaco’s recognition of Georgia’s contributions to Orthodox Christianity and encouraged further spiritual and cultural collaboration.

The evening also served as a charitable initiative, raising funds for the Monaco Red Cross, the Georgian Red Cross, and Saint Elena Parish. Organisers hope to surpass the 32,000 euros raised during last year’s gala.
The event’s success was attributed to the efforts of Alexander Hagerty, President of Saint Elena Parish, and a dedicated organising team. “Honouring Georgia continues our tradition of celebrating historic Orthodox nations while fostering charitable, spiritual, and cultural connections,” said Hagerty. Plans for the 2026 edition are already underway, promising even greater diplomatic and economic ties between Monaco and its next featured nation.
