The funeral of Henry Rey, a prominent figure in Monaco’s history, was held on Friday, January 17, at the Cathedral of Monaco…

His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, Princess Caroline, and numerous dignitaries gathered to pay tribute to a man whose legacy shaped the Principality’s political and sporting landscape.

Rey, who passed away on January 13 at the age of 86, was lauded by Prince Albert II as “an emblematic figure in Monegasque history.” His transformative leadership as President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee from 1975 to 1994 saw Monaco’s debut at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and the successful hosting of the Games of the Small States of Europe.

In football, Rey made history as the youngest-ever President of AS Monaco FC, overseeing the team’s return to Division 1 in 1971 under his rigorous management. His passion for sport extended to leading the Monte-Carlo Golf Club and the Monaco Weightlifting Federation, further cementing his reputation as a visionary advocate for athletics.

Rey also served on the National Council for four decades, earning admiration for his steadfast dedication. National Council President Thomas Brezzo praised his “unwavering commitment” to Monaco’s progress.

The ceremony marked a poignant farewell to a man whose enduring contributions to the Principality will not be forgotten.
