Under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology in Monaco has launched an extraordinary new temporary exhibition, ‘The Butterfly Effect: The Prehistory of Animals’. Running from December 1, 2024 to December 1, 2025, this immersive exhibition explores the intricate relationships between animal species and their evolution over time.
The exhibition draws inspiration from the concept of the “butterfly effect,” symbolising how minor changes in biodiversity can lead to significant transformations in ecosystems and evolutionary paths. It highlights the delicate interplay of nature and the profound impact of small changes on the natural world.
Visitors can explore remarkable archaeological collections, including original artefacts from Monaco and the Mediterranean region. The exhibit takes guests on a journey through time, showcasing species that once inhabited the local area and specimens from far-flung regions. Highlights include the renowned Siberian mammoth, on loan from HSH the Sovereign Prince, and an extensive display of the evolution of the ibex, developed as part of an international scientific initiative. The exhibition also examines humanity’s enduring connection with animals, featuring rare statuettes, fossils, and other artefacts. A special section focuses on the diversity of insects and butterflies, with displays of endemic and exotic species.
This ambitious project is supported by prominent partners, including Monaco’s Directorate of the Environment and the Jardin Animalier. These collaborators underscore the exhibition’s emphasis on conservation and environmental stewardship, presenting biodiversity inventories and Monaco’s National Biodiversity Strategy to showcase the Principality’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
Designed to engage visitors of all ages, The Butterfly Effect features a wide range of educational activities. Children can enjoy hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, while adults are invited to attend expert-led conferences and guided tours. Immersive projections and detailed informational panels provide deeper insights, ensuring an engaging and enriching experience.
The exhibition is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 at the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, located at 56 bis, Boulevard du Jardin Exotique. Entry is priced at five euros for adults and 2.50 euros for students, with free admission for children under 10 and specific groups. Guided tours are available by prior booking via mediationMAP@gouv.mc.
This remarkable exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the prehistoric world of animals and their lasting influence on our planet’s history.
