In response to two severe road accidents in mid-December, the Monegasque government has launched a robust campaign to curb reckless driving through increased enforcement. According to Monaco-Matin, Eric Arella, Monaco’s Director of Public Safety, confirmed the implementation of nightly speed and alcohol checks, a measure set to continue until Sunday, January 5.
The stepped-up measures aim to tackle road crime, which Arella described as a pressing concern for the Principality. Strategic checks will take place at various locations, including country borders and key points within Monaco, involving both uniformed and plainclothes officers. The approach is intended to both deter and penalise offenders.
Early results have highlighted the seriousness of the issue, with authorities already citing multiple incidents of drink driving and speeding, as well as violations such as crossing continuous lines. Arella stressed the importance of leaving a lasting impact through immediate actions while hinting at legislative changes to address the issue in the long term.
The government is also engaging with stakeholders, including taxi drivers and bar operators, to promote safer options for those who may be unfit to drive. Officials have urged a collective effort to prevent future tragedies, emphasising the availability of alternatives for individuals under the influence.
