As the Pelagos Agreement celebrates its 25th anniversary, Monaco reaffirms its role as a global leader in marine conservation…

This trilateral initiative between Monaco, France, and Italy, established in 1999, has been pivotal in safeguarding marine mammals and their habitats in the Mediterranean. With its achievements highlighted during a workshop at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the Agreement exemplifies the Principality’s dedication to protecting ocean ecosystems.

Over the years, the Pelagos Agreement has driven critical conservation efforts, including the creation of protected zones, progressive legislation, and the development of a network of nearly 100 coastal municipalities working collaboratively to protect cetaceans. During the anniversary event, two significant partnerships were formalized—one with InfoRac to improve data-sharing and another with the International Whaling Commission to strengthen global conservation strategies.

This commitment aligns seamlessly with Monaco’s broader environmental agenda. Initiatives such as the Oceanographic Institute’s ongoing exhibitions, the Prince Albert II Foundation’s focus on biodiversity, and Monaco’s active role in the United Nations highlight the nation’s resolve to combat climate change and preserve marine ecosystems. Earlier this year, Monaco showcased its leadership at events like the 19th session of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee and the awarding of the EEA Gold label for energy efficiency.

With the Pelagos Agreement set to feature at the 3rd United Nations Conference on Oceans, Monaco continues to demonstrate its proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges. The Agreement not only celebrates past successes but also underscores Monaco’s enduring commitment to a sustainable future for the Mediterranean and beyond.
