AS Monaco has rallied behind defender Wilfried Singo after he faced a wave of abuse on social media following an incident during their Ligue 1 match against Paris Saint-Germain (2-4) on the evening of Wednesday, December 18. Singo accidentally injured PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, sparking backlash online, including unacceptable racist remarks.
In a statement released Thursday morning on X, the club strongly condemned the abuse, declaring, “AS Monaco condemns in the strongest terms the unacceptable racist remarks that Wilfried Singo was the target of on social media after last night’s match against Paris Saint-Germain. These behaviors have no place in sport, neither on nor off the field, and are in total contradiction with the values that the club defends.”
The 23-year-old Ivorian defender also addressed the incident, expressing remorse for the injury. “My gesture was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterward that he had a serious injury to his face. I wish you a good recovery,” Singo wrote in an Instagram story.
The clash occurred during the second half, leaving Donnarumma with a facial injury from Singo’s cleats. Displaying sportsmanship, Singo went to the PSG locker room after the match to personally apologise. In a video shared by PSG on X, Donnarumma appeared calm and reassured Singo with a smile, saying, “Everything is fine, calm down.”
This incident has drawn attention to the broader issue of racism and abuse in sports, with Monaco emphasising the need for mutual respect and unity both on and off the pitch.
