The Roca Team has now officially announced the appointment of Vassilis Spanoulis as the team’s new head coach. Spanoulis, a legendary figure in European basketball, will lead the Principality side for the next two seasons, with an option for a third year.
The announcement follows the departure of Sasa Obradovic, who stepped down as head coach. Spanoulis, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished players and now an emerging coaching talent, steps into the role as Monaco aims to strengthen its position among Europe’s basketball elite.
Spanoulis brings extensive experience to Monaco, having recently coached Peristeri Athens, where he made an immediate impact. During his tenure, he guided the team to the Greek National Cup final, secured third place in the Greek Championship, and led them to the Basketball Champions League Final Four. His remarkable success in his debut seasons earned him the title of Coach of the Year.
Before his coaching career, Spanoulis enjoyed an extraordinary playing career. Known as “Kill Bill,” he is a three-time EuroLeague champion and a cornerstone of Greece’s 2005 European Championship-winning team. Spanoulis was named EuroLeague Final Four MVP three times, league MVP once, and held the title of the EuroLeague’s all-time leading scorer until recently, when Monaco’s own Mike James surpassed him. Now, the former rival will take on a new role as James’s coach.
Spanoulis’s influence extends to the international stage, where he recently led the Greek national team to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Under his leadership, Greece reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Germany. This high-profile appointment signals Monaco’s ambition to build on recent successes and establish itself as a dominant force in European basketball.
