From October 21 to 25, 2024, Monaco participated in the 52nd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) held in Rome…

The event marked the committee’s 50th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the adoption of guidelines on the right to adequate food in the context of national food security. These guidelines serve as a framework for the actions of its member states.

During the session, the 2024 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report was presented, estimating that between 713 and 757 million people suffered from hunger in 2023, which represents 1 in 11 people globally and 1 in 5 in Africa. While global food insecurity remained stable, improvements were seen in Latin America, with projections indicating that 582 million people will still face chronic undernourishment by 2030, with over half of them in Africa. The discussions also highlighted critical humanitarian situations in Gaza and Sudan.

The session resulted in the adoption of general policy recommendations aimed at reducing inequalities to ensure food security and adequate nutrition for all. Monaco’s delegation, led by H.E. Anne Eastwood, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the FAO, commended this progress and reiterated Monaco’s active commitment to fighting inequalities through its international cooperation projects.

In addition, the CFS reviewed the implementation of the 2023 voluntary guidelines on gender equality and women’s empowerment within food security and nutrition. Monaco will also participate in upcoming recommendations on urban food systems.

On the sidelines of the session, the Monegasque delegation held bilateral meetings with the FAO’s Emergency and Resilience Office to explore new partnerships in the Sahel and the Middle East, as well as with the Minister of Agriculture of the Kingdom of Lesotho.
