A Monegasque start-up, Grogenics, has made impressive strides in sustainability by obtaining the prestigious Gold Standard certification for its carbon credits…

Founded in 2023 by Canadian entrepreneur Michel Kaine, Grogenics specializes in managing the harmful sargassum algae that plagues beaches in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The company works closely with luxury hotels to remove the algae and turn it into environmentally friendly products like compost and biochar.

The Gold Standard certification is a major milestone for the start-up, which has already gained the backing of Monaco’s government and joined the MonacoTech incubator. “Being approved by Gold Standard is the highest recognition for carbon credit quality,” said Kaine. The certification validates Grogenics’ project to clean up sargassum from the beaches of Mexico’s Quintana Roo province, ensuring their efforts have a measurable environmental impact.

Grogenics’ innovative approach has already attracted numerous clients in the tourism industry. “The ecological quality of our work has been acknowledged, and we can now focus on pre-sales of carbon credits to fund future projects,” Kaine added.

Looking ahead, Grogenics is preparing to expand its impact, with ambitions to secure the prestigious Solar Impulse label next. With its forward-thinking and sustainable solutions, Grogenics is poised to become a leader in eco-friendly practices, setting new standards for the tourism and environmental sectors alike.
