In a high-stakes appeal hearing, two South African yacht crew members, aged 27 and 28, are fighting to overturn their prison sentences following a September 5 altercation in Monaco’s port that left a man severely injured…

The two young men, initially sentenced to two months in prison, are back in court, their fates hinging on a court decision expected November 4.

The pair had been enjoying a night out when a confrontation turned violent. According to witnesses, an argument spiraled as the two, allegedly provoked by a man who had followed them, reacted with punches, leaving the victim with multiple fractures, broken teeth, and a 15-day medical leave due to his injuries. The entire incident was captured on video, replayed in court to scrutinize what has been described as a night where alcohol fueled extreme reactions.

Defense lawyers, however, argue that the defendants were provoked. “They had no intention to fight but felt threatened,” claimed one of the crew members. Their legal team emphasized that these men are “exceptional individuals,” supported by their crew and yacht owners, who have defended them throughout the ordeal.

Deputy Attorney General Morgan Raymond, however, was clear in his condemnation. “You are sailors, not pirates!” he declared, urging the court to uphold the initial sentence to maintain Monaco’s reputation as a peaceful destination.

If convicted, the incident could mar their clean records, which may affect future aspirations of settling abroad with their partners. The defense pleaded for leniency, stressing that a single night should not ruin their clients’ futures.

The court will announce its judgment on November 4, almost exactly two months after the incident, which has rocked Monaco’s image of serenity.
