Monaco is taking a major step forward in its regional transport plans with the purchase of two new TER trains, scheduled to be operational by 2028…

This €36 million investment aims to improve the region’s rail services, addressing ongoing challenges with congestion and reliability. Each new train will offer 500 seats, adding to the five trains Monaco funded back in 2008, bringing the total fleet to seven.

The move comes as Monaco’s train station sees a sharp rise in passenger traffic, surging from 3 million users in 1999 to 8.1 million in 2023. The increased demand has put pressure on existing infrastructure, leading to frequent service disruptions. With the addition of the new trains, the government hopes to ease this strain, enhancing capacity and service for daily commuters and residents.

The newer models will boast advanced designs, aiming for improved efficiency and comfort. While they undergo production, older trains are being refurbished to maintain reliability across the fleet.

Monaco’s commitment to rail improvements is part of a larger regional effort. Starting in December 2024, the area will see more frequent trains, with services every 15 minutes between Cannes, Nice, and Menton, aiming for a 98% punctuality rate. Further bolstering the initiative, private operator Transdev will take over key routes in 2025, enhancing efficiency and reliability.

With these strategic investments, Monaco is poised to modernize its transport network, promising smoother, more dependable commutes for millions of passengers.
