Monaco continues to make waves on the international sporting field…
The Principality’s delegation, led by Lionel Beffre, Government Counselor-Minister of the Interior, took a lead role in the 18th Conference of European Sports Ministers held in Porto from October 8-10, 2024. Beffre was elected Vice President of the conference, which focused on good governance in sports.
The gathering brought together 46 member states of the Council of Europe, along with Israel, Morocco, the Vatican, and numerous international sports organizations and associations. Beffre underscored Monaco’s commitment to sports governance, highlighted in the country’s proposed sports legislation currently under review by the National Council.
Adding to the excitement, Monaco was officially selected to host the next Ministerial Conference in 2026. Prince Albert II had already announced this during his speech in Strasbourg on October 2, marking the 20th anniversary of Monaco’s membership in the Council of Europe. The 2026 event will be the crown jewel of Monaco’s presidency of the Council’s Committee of Ministers.
Monaco has long been an active and respected member of the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS), with its Permanent Representative holding the presidency of EPAS’s statutory committee since 2016. Hosting the 2026 Conference will further solidify Monaco’s influence in shaping the future of sports governance on an international stage.
