The Princely Palace of Monaco has long been a symbol of elegance and history, but recent discoveries have added an exciting new chapter to its legacy.
Nothing is quite as exciting as discovering hidden treasure. However, that is exactly what happened when the discovery was made of the ceiling frescoes in the Palace’s Throne Room. Concealed beneath layers of paint for centuries, the paintings have now been fully restored, revealing a dazzling display of artistry that dates back to the 16th century. Thanks to the meticulous efforts of conservation experts, visitors can now experience these masterpieces in all their original glory.
The restoration project, launched in 2015 under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, has elevated the Palace’s significance in the global art world. The discovery was made by pure chance, but the results have been nothing short of spectacular. The ceiling fresco, depicting Ulysses’ journey home after the Trojan War, is complemented by stunning depictions of Zodiac signs and the changing seasons. It’s a visual story that captivates and transports viewers through time.
In addition to the Throne Room, restoration efforts extended to the Galerie d’Hercules, where “cracks” on the lunettes were revealed to be skillfully painted panels. These were carefully recreated to maintain aesthetic continuity, blending modern restoration techniques with historical authenticity.
Sustainability was a key focus of the project, with the Palace’s chief conservator-restorer, Julia Greiner, leading the charge. Curator-restorer Eleonora Cerra pioneered the use of laser technology to clean the frescoes, ensuring that no harmful chemicals were used—a nod to the Prince’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
As restoration efforts continue in other parts of the Palace, including the Salon Louis XIII, there’s a sense of anticipation for what might be uncovered next.
