The President of Monaco’s National Council, Thomas Brezzo, hosted a key meeting with the mayors of neighbouring municipalities—Xavier Beck, Patrick Cesari, Gerard Spinelli, and Jean-Jacques Raffaele—at the National Council on Friday, September 13.

The meeting, attended by Monaco Mayor Georges Marsan, as well as Fabrice Notari and Franck Lobono, aimed to address pressing transportation challenges affecting both residents and workers in the region.

With thousands of workers commuting daily to the Principality, many have been impacted by the disruptions in TER train services between Nice and Ventimiglia, compounded by the simultaneous closure of Monaco’s tunnel connecting to the A8 highway. The assembled officials unanimously expressed their frustration over the lack of prior consultation and communication regarding these disruptions, which have left commuters without viable alternatives.

During the meeting, the leaders welcomed the opportunity to discuss issues affecting the daily lives of the broader regional population. Acknowledging the urgency of preserving the quality of life for commuters and residents, both French and Monegasque officials agreed on concrete steps to improve transport and urban planning. Among the proposed solutions are improvements in urban infrastructure and road networks, aimed at facilitating smoother and more sustainable access to the Principality for workers.

President Brezzo committed to bringing the group’s recommendations to the Monegasque government, urging collaboration with French authorities to ensure that any upcoming works serve the best interests of all stakeholders.

Pleased with the constructive dialogue and potential solutions, the mayors and the National Council president plan to hold regular meetings to continue addressing these critical issues.
