Villa Belgica, the historic headquarters of UBS Monaco since 1998, is entering a new era with a transformative project led by the renowned architect Jean Nouvel. This iconic building of the Principality, known for its corner dome and Belle Époque architecture, has a rich history of adaptations to suit the lifestyles of its owners and the needs of its generations.

The storied building is set to be completed in November this year, to the satisfaction of the UBS Monaco team and their valued clients.

Originally acquired by Alfred Bouvier, the official Belgian representative in Monaco, in 1925/26, Villa Belgica was named in honour of his homeland. The early 1930s saw the first elevation of the building, which preserved its original dome and balustrade. However, the architect behind these modifications remains unknown. Between 1956 and 1959, Monégasque architect Julien Médécin led a second elevation, which altered the building’s aesthetics by removing the dome and changing its proportions. Despite the lack of architectural documentation from 1956 to the present, it appears that the villa has retained its 1950s façade.

Now, in 2024, under the visionary guidance of Nouvel, Villa Belgica is poised for another transformation. Nouvel’s approach has preserved the historical essence of the building while integrating contemporary elements, creating a “harmony of growth.” This balance respects the architectural heritage and meets the modern needs of UBS Monaco. The project, located at 2 Avenue de Grande Bretagne, includes the reconstruction and elevation of Villa Belgica, expanding its total surface area to 1,636 m².

Nouvel explains: “The architecture created will express the differences related to uses and lived histories. Thus, we will find the engraved traces of the destroyed elevation or the expression by the built limit of the terrace awning, the translation of the preserved cornice from the original hotel, and even the reuse of bow windows from the past century.”

The Michel Pastor Group manages the Villa Belgica project, aiming for BREEAM Excellence and BD2M ‘Gold’ certifications. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) evaluates the environmental performance of buildings, ensuring high standards in energy efficiency, resource management, and occupant well-being. BD2M (Sustainable Mediterranean Buildings of Monaco) is the highest distinction in sustainability in Monaco, underscoring UBS Monaco’s commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility.

UBS Monaco’s new headquarters will offer first-class banking services and superior amenities, redefining private banking standards. The move to the heart of the Principality will facilitate client access and make these historic headquarters a prime location for meetings and exchanges. The top three floors will feature an unprecedented concept of dining and living, providing an unparalleled experience in Monaco.
