Minister of External Relations and Cooperation, Ms. Isabelle Berro-Amadei, spoke at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council on February 27, 2024.

Ms. Berro-Amadei first of all wanted to reaffirm the Principality’s attachment to the values and ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 75th anniversary of which was celebrated last year. She then mentioned several very worrying situations including those in the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan. She also addressed the environmental and climate crisis which seriously threatens the full realisation of human rights across the planet.

For several years, Monaco has supported the work of the United Nations special rapporteur for the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment. The Minister concluded by reaffirming the imperative need to promote and defend the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Monaco’s unwavering attachment to the Human Rights Council.

The Council, a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, is the main UN body competent for the promotion and protection of human rights. It sits in Geneva and is made up of 47 States elected by the General Assembly for a period of three years. The 55th session will be held from February 26 to April 5, 2024.
