After the ceremonies of twinning in Monaco on Friday morning, several events were held in Dolceacqua later in the day at which the red and white flag of Monaco flew over the Commune. Despite very uninviting weather, several hundred people attended the Twinning ceremony in the presence of HSH Prince Albert ll in Piazza Mauro.
As a clear sign of the importance of the twinning, the term “historic” was used several times and repeated during the ceremony itself. After the reading of the Oath, Mayors Georges Marsan and Fulvio Gazzola signed the twinning documents and in his speech, Georges Marsan made a point of saying that the existing links between Monaco and Dolceacqua must continue in several areas – cultural, sporting and associative.
A little earlier in the afternoon, the Mayor and members of the Municipal Council attended an organ concert in the heart of San Giorgio Church. In front of the Town Hall, the olive tree, a tree symbol of peace and life, was in the spotlight. The cutting from a century-old olive tree of the Princess Antoinette Park, a gift from Monaco, was planted. Several children from the primary school of Dolceacqua offered a small olive tree to the Municipality of Monaco.
