A 60 percent increase in the price of entry for the Stade Nautique Rainier III swimming pool on Port Hercule has infuriated some users but made others very happy.
The price hike voted by the Town Hall in April applies only to those from outside the Principality, and as a result the number of users fell from 8,962 in June last year to 7,685 in the same month this year.
Monegasques and residents interviewed by Monaco Matin welcomed the move. One Monegasque couple told the local French daily: “There is no comparison with the past years. We are no longer victims of theft in the changing rooms, nor on the deckchairs and we can come in complete peace of mind with our children. Over the past three years, it had become hellish with groups of young people who came from certain districts of Nice.”
A long-time resident said of the visitors: “They came in groups to steal cell phones which they threw over the barrier where friends were waiting for them… The police did not even have time to intervene.”
