Her Excellency Ms. Maguy Maccario-Doyle, Ambassador of Monaco to the USA and Canada, represented HSH the Sovereign Prince at the 8th international Conference “Our Ocean”, which took place in Panama City, on March 2 and 3 2023.

The event brought together more than 600 representatives of governments, the private sector and NGOs who debated the “blue economy” for the protection and sustainable use of the seas and oceans.

At the end of the two days of debates on climate change, marine protected areas, sustainable fishing and maritime safety, more than 340 announcements of financial contributions for a total amount of approximately $20 billion were made.

The President of Panama, Mr Laurentino Cortizo, signed a decree expanding the marine protected area Banco Volcano (Caribbean Sea) from 14,000 to 93,000 km2, nearly 55 percent of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of his country.

Mr John Kerry, Special Envoy of the President of the United States for Climate, launched the “Green Shipping” initiative ccreating maritime corridors reserved for low- or zero-carbon ships, an initiative already joined by the Republic of Fiji, the Republic of Panama and the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership.

Ambassador Maccario-Doyle, for her part, announced Monaco’s support for the Call for Action for the protection of the marine environment, including seabed mining launched as a follow-up to the 15th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) held in Montreal in December 2022.
