For their final friendly fixture of the 2022 preseason campaign, AS Monaco travelled to England to face off against Premier League side Southampton in St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday, July 27.

Summer signing Takumi Minamino was among the starting players, and wasted no time in getting stuck in right from kick-off. The former Liverpool attacking midfielder kept pushing and provided the pass that lead to Monaco’s first and only goal of the match.

Aleksandr Golovin was on the receiving end of the bouncing ball and was not wasteful with the opportunity, as the Russian Midfielder fired it into the bottom left corner of the goal.

By halftime the scoreline stood at 0-1 to Monaco, but Southampton managed to find the equaliser shortly thereafter. Unfortunately for the visitors, Southampton’s equaliser seemed to signal a change in spirit, as the hosts began to apply more pressure on the pitch.

After a few forays up towards the Principality’s posts, Southampton managed to bag another goal, bringing the scoreline to 2-1 at the 73rd minute.

That wasn’t enough for the hosts, though, as they came back to bite again five minutes before the match could conclude. A shot from outside the box brought the hosts to 3-1 at the 85th minute.

After a game of two starkly contrasting halves the Monegasque’s look ahead to a more important fixture, as they prepare to face off against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the first of two legs of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday, August 2.
